Mª Carmen de Alba´s talk on WordPress Accessibility was to-the-point, funny and very clear. The title to her talk was “Put yourself in my shoes and make it easy”.  “Ponte en mi lugar, hazlo fácil”. And this is what she does. This is her attitude towards life, and her dynamism and strength has brought her to where she is today.

Clear Communication

For “clear” communication, she suggests the use of the following fonts; Sans Serif, Arial, Helvetica, Verdana or Tahoma. She also tells us about not using “justified text” as this creates big, uneven spaces between words and is difficult  for people with dyslexia to follow. She suggests we don’t use underlined text, unless it is for a link to a page, as once more this confuses users. Amongst many other interesting information she shares, she also alerts Web designers not to use animations. This being because they are not good for people with migraines, epilepsy and other disorders. When there are animations these must be able to be stopped, for users with these problems. Section 508, of the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) for 2010, has stipulated that will make it obligatory to stop animations.

Accessible Themes

She concludes by giving us some Accessible themes, “Universal and  Milky Way” both by Joe Dolson.
